COP26, political will and early stage investing

We are very excited to close our first tranche of investment just as COP26 starts…….with investments into Earthly.org, Radpropulsion.com and Zeigo.com.

COP26

COP26 really underlines why Climatetech investing offers a marriage of positive impact with massive growth potential. The sheer amount of political will and regulation supporting the transition to a global low carbon economy is unprecedented. Larry Fink of Black Rock fame recently stated that the next 1000 unicorns will be in Climate Tech – possibly an overstatement but you get the point. The investment community is really starting to wake up to the scale of the challenge and the opportunity.

In 2019, the UK passed legislation which commits the country to having a carbon neutral economy by 2050. COP26 is only going to increase the political pressure in all countries to move towards net zero. The changes required to energy production, housing and transport are transformative and long term with momentum likely to last decades.

What is needed is a concrete collaborative carbon emissions framework from COP26 that lets us all move forward globally. More developed countries hitting emissions targets is a mammoth issue, but it is almost the easy part. How to create an economic development path for developing countries whilst capping emissions is much more complex.

Consumer demand & COP26

COP26 is also noticeably more mainstream than previous climate change conferences. Being a sustainable business is now not just a marketing message, but a potential differentiator that could help companies to outgrow and outlast their less sustainable competitors. OnePlanetCapital’s own research shows 75% of consumers are now very concerned about climate change and environmental issues. As corporates move rapidly to become sustainable this creates huge opportunities for new businesses coming into the space.

The road to 2050

The path to sustainability is a long-term market dynamic that will ensure M&A, consumer and business demand, and ultimately exit opportunities, are here for the next 20 years.
